new york

synopsis:
Created in response to the events of September 11th,
"New York" touches on both the fragility of life and the resiliency of the human spirit.
The project is an homage to New York City - the most diversely populated place on earth.
Air is a recurring element - essential for life but also a conduit for harm.

"I unwittingly shot the images for "New York" back in the summer of 2000 when I was living in NYC and directing a television commercial during the day. Upon being invited to create a film in response to the tragedy, I went back and re-examined what I had shot more than a year before. Post-September 11th, the images of buildings, planes, clouds, and the people of New York City had an entirely new subtext. I think of the film as more a visual poem than anything else. It's a fairly subtle piece, but then after seeing images of the towers collapsing over and over on TV, I felt I wanted to go in a decidedly different direction."

"Filmmaker Chel White captures a series of views of the Manhattan skyline where even the most seemingly benign images hold unsettling reminders of a fateful day in September."
